Your Federal Income Tax Forms Are All Online

Stop checking the mailbox for your federal income tax return forms, because they are not going to be there. In an effort to save $10 million per year in printing costs, the IRS decided to stop sending paper forms to taxpayers. 92 percent of taxpayers filed online or through a professional preparer last year, leaving only 8 percent of the tax paying population to file paper returns.

The IRS saw this as an opportunity to help the environment and save a lot of money. Because most taxpayers use a preparer to file or file online, it no longer was cost effective to the IRS to mail out tax forms in paper. However, they did not leave you hanging if you still wish to file paper forms. There are still several ways to get your tax forms to file before April 18.

All of the tax forms are available online at the IRS website, where you can also find detailed filing instructions for each form. You can print them out and mail them in, or you can file them directly through the IRS website using Free File. Forms 1040 (including 1040EZ, 1040, and 1040A) and other commonly used income tax forms are available at most IRS offices, at the post office, and in some libraries. The IRS also maintains a forms hotline which you can call to get what you need to file. The number is 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676).

Some taxpayers have complained that this cost-cutting method of the IRS is not helpful, and that filing taxes has now become a burden. However, the forms are available in multiple places and the IRS is making an effort to make sure taxpayers know that they are not coming in the mail and how to get them.

However, since this is the first year that paper forms are not mailed to everyone, it is impossible to anticipate how many forms each locale will need. Because of this, it may behoove you to call any location before driving out of your way to go by in case the forms are not there. Some taxpayers who choose to file on paper have reported problems getting the actual tax forms from the listed locations, and so calling to ask if they are there may help save you some time.

Also, remember that filing your tax return is still a legal responsibility even though you got no form in the mail. All of the information you need is available on the website, by calling the IRS, or by stopping by your local IRS office.
