What is the Salary For a Medical Billing Specialist?

Helen Hecker asked:
If you’re thinking about medical billing as a career or becoming a Medical Billing Specialist, one of the deciding factors may be – what can I make or what is the salary? Salaries for Medical Billing Specialists vary around the country. And salaries are considerably larger in large cities in the US.
Before you even consider becoming a medical biller or sign up for any training you want to make sure you have medical billing services or companies in your area. Smaller communities may not have these services or companies and the health clinics that would need your services may send their work out to companies in large cities.
So if you plan to make medical billing and/or coding a career make sure you will have a place to work. If there are few of these businesses of places in your community you may have a lot of competition for a job. So check this all out first. Medical coding is a related career to consider requiring different sets of skills and abilities.
So if your community does not have a lot of these companies and is mostly done in-house by doctors’ offices then you may have more competition for the jobs that are available.
You may want to call around to the larger doctors’ offices and find out if they send their billing work out or do it in-house to get an idea what the job market is.
If at all possible visit a billing company or the larger doctors’ offices and see what you can find out in person about the availability of jobs. You don’t want to invest in a lot of training or go to school, sign up for programs, courses or classes and get certification and then find out there are no jobs.
You can expect a salary range between $26,000 and $32,000 per year if you’re certified. Most companies won’t hire you unless you’re certified. The exception may be if you have experience already but you may not make the salary you would if you were certified.
On an hourly wage basis it can vary a lot – anywhere between $11 and hour to $21 an hour. Again it’s going to be dependent on certification as a Medical Billing Specialist and/or experience you have in the field. Any related experience may help.
Now that you have an idea about what the salary is for a Medical Billing Specialist, please be aware of any scams that may be operating in the medical billing field. Check out everything thoroughly before you commit to any contracts and read the fine print carefully. Get testimonials. You can save yourself a lot of heartache later if you take more time now to find out all you can. It’s important to talk to people who are already working in the field if you can. Visiting local clinics or billing companies as I mentioned is one way. Of course researching online is another.
