It is impossible to notice the world changing around us due to the economic troubles it has been experiencing over the past few years. Businesses we thought would be around forever have closed their doors. Jobs we thought would provide security have disappeared while the cost of living has continued to rise. There is no denying things have changed and the economy we knew is gone and a new one is coming in.

The question in many minds is “What do we do now?” As I heard someone say recently, if you are wondering if the old economy is coming back you may already have been left behind. One of the best things we can do in a time like this is to stop waiting for the past to reappear and look forward with anticipation to the opportunities that lie ahead. Despite what you may be thinking, there are opportunities out there.

As someone who is self employed I have felt the change in the economy as clients have no longer been able to afford my services. The good new for me as a freelance bookkeeper is that there are many who are succeeding while others are struggling. As long as I don’t allow myself to be rattled by the changes around me I can continue growing my business too. I do this by making changes that will help me stay competitive and gain new clients.

If you find yourself without a job or a business, you might want to consider educating yourself on the subject of bookkeeping. If you like to work with numbers and are good at staying organized, you could be a very good bookkeeper. Though it may seem like it, bookkeeping is not an overly complicated subject to learn. What it takes is a willingness to learn and to continue learning long after you have gotten started.

If you do decide to become a bookkeeper, I encourage you to strongly consider learning as much as you can and get started. As a bookkeeper you can look for a job with a good company or start your own bookkeeping business. With a solid foundation of bookkeeping knowledge I was able to start my own bookkeeping business and expand it to include payroll and tax preparation services. You can do the same if you put your mind to it and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead and not let fear hold you back.
