Spearfishing is a form of hunting used by divers to catch fish all over the world. The hunter has the ability to choose which fish he/she would like to take without harming other marine life. The advantage spearfishing has over regular fishing is that you don’t have to worry about dealing with any undersized or unwanted fish species.

A lot of conventional fisherman get the idea that spearfishing is a shady or cheat’s way of catching fish and frown upon it. In fact a lot of people think that by jumping into the water with a speargun you can catch as many fish as you like!

It’s certainly not that easy, but at the same time it isn’t necessarily hard either. It usually just takes a bit of experience and knowledge to bring home fish on a regular basis. There are dangers involved with spearfishing like the chance of drowning due to the amount of time spent underwater or the unlikely chance of a shark attack. However, if you receive some training and learn some of the basics of spearfishing, those risks can be minimised.

Some of the spearfishing information and skills you need to learn are:

•Spearfishing Spots
The different underwater locations around the world that you can spear fish in. Reefs are the most common destination for spearo’s as they offer a really diverse array of fish species. There are also the creeks and estuaries as well as blue water spearfishing.

•Spearfishing Tips and Techniques
You will need to learn some of the skills that will help you with the actual hunting of the fish. Some important techniques include stalking, shooting and retrieving the fish as well as some tips to help your game such as improving your breath hold.

•Spearguns
To go spearfishing you will require a speargun. It may be a rubber-powered or a pneumatic gun, so understanding what the different spearguns have to offer will help you decide which one will be best for you. Then there is the maintenance side to spearguns which will keep your spearguns performing well for longer.

•Clothing / Equipment
When you go spearfishing you will have quite a bit of gear to take. The equipment will include wetsuits, fins, gloves, dive knives, masks and snorkels, etc. The more you know about the different pieces of equipment, the easier it will be to select the right stuff. It’s never fun finding out you have spent your paycheque on something useless!

Anybody can have a go at spearfishing. It is not an age or gender based sport and it provides an unforgettable experience of what the underwater world is like. And of course there is the sense of satisfaction you get when you catch your own food.
