Rubber Powered Spear Guns

Personally I much prefer to use rubber powered spear guns than the air powered ones. They just seem to be more reliable and versatile, although they are more costly when it comes to replacing rubbers and bridles! Most of the guns are referred to as rail guns, because the spear sits in a distinct rail that runs along the length of the gun. This ensures that the spear shoots out straight as it is guided by the rail. Rubber powered guns can be made more and more powerful too, simply by fitting more and more rubbers (or increasing the size of the rubbers).

Of course, give yourself some room to grow when getting a spear gun. There is no point getting something which shoots reasonably but that doesn’t have room for a second rubber if you think you are going to get better at the sport. Generally two 16mm rubbers will shoot most fish, and then you are starting to get quite good at the sport if you want to go anything bigger than that. For massive fish, I have seen people use up to 16 rubbers, on a huge cannon gun. This is only good for shooting huge fish, and it takes a long time to load all of the rubbers!

When getting these guns ensure that you use a high quality brand of rubber. Often paying the extra money for a brand name rubber (like the blue Rob Allen rubber for example) will pay off in the long run. Sure, you can go and buy cheap rubber but is it going to give as much punch, and will it last for as long? In my experience the better quality rubber is well worth the extra few dollars!
