IRS Tax form 1040 is used to file the income tax return for individual income. You could be single or married who is filing a joint return with your spouse. Depending on your filing status (whether you are married or single), your dependents and your annual income the form could be 1040EZ or 1040A.
You could get the form your local post office, or the IRS or state tax office nearest to you, or could be downloaded from the website of IRS.
Before you start filling form 1040 make sure that you have all the supporting forms like W2, 1099MISC, W4 etc. Document W4 is the “Employees’ Withholding Allowance Certificate”. By filling up this form, your employer could deduct the tax on your income from your pay monthly and pay to IRS. W2 is for wage and tax statement. It could not be download from the website as it cannot be scanned. You will have to obtain that from IRS Office or from your employer. 1099MISC is used to report income from other sources if you are self employed.
First step in preparing the document number 1040 is to fill in the details such as name, address, social security number, whether you are single or if married, whether individual or joint filing. Always make sure to enter the correct social security number or your return will be filed under someone else’s social security number. Then comes the income section. All the income you earned in that particular year has to be filled in. All the forms that show your income is required here. W2, W4 etc are supporting documents for your income.
Then you will have to fill in the net taxable income. Net taxable income is arrived by subtracting the eligible deductions. The deductions may be mortgage loan, children’s education expense, donations to charity, alimony paid extra. These expenses have to be legitimate and the legitimacy has to be proved.
The tax credits have to be applied. This could be derived from schedule A if the deductions are itemized. You must ensure all tax credits applicable to you from tax form 1040. All taxes you have already paid or with held by your employer may be entered next. The total taxes paid may be deducted from the tax you have to pay.
If you paid excess tax, you are entitled to a refund. If you have to pay more, it should be paid with the tax returns while filing.
