How Does a Speargun Work?

There are two main types of spearguns. The first is air powered, and the second is rubber powered. Both guns have the ability to kill fish by shooting a spear out at high speed. The spear pierces the fish and either kills it straight away, or wounds it enough for you to pull it in and kill it with a knife. Air powered guns are pumped up above water, and the air creates pressure in a small chamber. By pressing the firing trigger the air is released towards the spear, pushing it out at high speed.

Rail guns, or rubber powered spear guns work in a similar fashion. To load the gun, you simply pull the rubber (or rubbers!) back and hook the bridle (s) over small notches in the spears. The spear is held in place by a small catch, which is dropped when you pull the trigger. The rubber pushes the spear out at high speed, and the rail (where the spear sits in) ensures that the spear takes off in a straight line! A line is attached from the gun to the end of the spear, so the spear can’t be lost.

Assuming you manage to hit the fish you simply pull the line in (and the spear has a small piece of metal which sticks out ensuring the fish can’t get off) and grab the fish. If the fish is dead you can take it off the spear, and put it on your float or in a boat. If it isn’t, you get a knife and kill it. Then all you need to do is put the spear back, wind the line back around the gun and load the rubbers again.
