The Big 4 are the four largest international accountancy and professional services firms, which handle the vast majority of audits for publicly traded companies as well as many private companies, creating an oligopoly over the auditing industry. If you have recently qualified as an ACA, you are probably looking for the chance to take control of your career and develop your skills. BusinessWeek just released its 2009 rankings of its much-anticipated “2009 Best Places To Launch A Career” list and for a second year, Big Four firms completely dominate the list, capturing the top four spots in the rankings. This year, only 69 companies made the list compared to 119 in 2008 due to more stringent criteria, making the 2009 list “both more exclusive and more competitive.” Thus, this year, there was more relative competition to make the list and this year’s rankings are at least 40% tougher than the previous year.

The Big Four public accounting firms (PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, Ernst & Young, Deloitte Touche Tohmasu) are the best in the industry and a launching pad for an amazing career.
I joined KPMG in my early career and spent a number of years building up a career consulting practice within the KPMG Management Consulting part of the firm. Working with a big 4 firm like KPMG (KPMG Peat Marwick in those days) is an incredible experience and one I would recommend to anyone who wants to develop their career.
