Software has become more complex and essential to everyday life and business for most people. One of the newest trends is that of online accounting software where the actual program is remotely hosted on a server that might be located a world away. There are some very good reasons for individuals and businesses to choose remotely hosted software such as online accounting software, and we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this trending method.

Computers and the internet have changed the way we do business and even how we account for our money, time and accounts receivable. This reliance on computer programs applies to both the individual and the huge corporation. Dependence upon computers to keep track of these essential financial operations has grown and the programs which do the work for us have evolved to meet the changing needs of the users.

However, more complex programs can demand more expensive hardware and for corporations a full time IT team to deploy and maintain the machines. Software conflicts are not unusual when multiple programs must be run on a single machine. These types of problems can be costly in terms of time for the individual and for a business.

Our financial information is the most valuable and the most sensitive information we have. A hardware failure can cost businesses money and delay invoicing as well as payments. Individuals keep their financial statements on computer programs and losing that information can be devastating. It is rare that a backup plan is truly inclusive and protects against disasters or hardware malfunction. However remotely hosted programs are professionally backed up and the chance of losing this all important data is minimal.

Protection against data loss is just a single but compelling reason that remotely hosted software is becoming more popular. The cost of deploying these programs can be significantly less for a corporation with many hundreds of computers as well as for the individual with only a single user. Updates and upgrades are taken care of by the remote host and security and availability are often superior to that provided locally.

Hardware upgrades when using remotely hosted software is not the problem of the user, but of the host. That means that in order to run some of the most popular and demanding packages for accounting today, the user needs only an internet connection and a web browser. Unlike days gone by when every upgrade to a program required an upgrade in memory or demanded a more advanced processor remotely hosted programs demand little of the computer accessing it.

Software conflicts are the bane of most computer users whether they are an individual or a corporation. Insert one program and then another, and the possibility exists that the machine can become unstable due to these conflicts. While that is a possibility with locally hosted programs, remotely hosted software doesn’t cause these issues since all the computing is done on the remote host not the user’s machine.

The single clear disadvantage to online accounting software or any remotely hosted program is that they do require a stable internet connection. Most remote hosts will customize the packages for the user. However, if a corporation has many users, individual customization for each user might be harder to obtain.
